Volunteer operated and maintained by the Austin Cactus and Succulent Society, this greenhouse has an incredible variety of old and young xerophytes for both the hobbyist and collector to excite. This is an active greenhouse, with many members working to maintain it as well as continue to cultivate new seedlings so that the collection can continue.
This is not so much of a curated space, but a messy, living, breathing collection (literally and figuratively). And I love it for that.
The cactus greenhouse at the Zilker Botanical is a hidden gem because access is not readily available (as mentioned, it is maintained by the club itself). So I’m happy to share what many others have yet to see! Enjoy!
- Myself and ACSS member Roy Mata, who can often be seen tending to his collection of seedlings he grows in the greenhouse.
